CAPITAL DISTRICT HUMANIST SOCIETY BOOK SEMINARSpring 2014 Schedule
Meetings are held from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m., on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from September through early June with occasional exceptions, and holiday recesses. They will be held in room 101 of the Campus Center, Sage College, Albany, unless otherwise noted at the site.
I have now read about half of our next book, THE SEDUCTION of UNREASON. This is what happens when we pick a book nobody has actually read. The introductory sections are written in Academic-ese, and pretty quickly I was saying to myself, am I going to have to (try to) read 300 pages like this? Happily though, the rest of the book is written in a language more resembling English. It is largely intelligible, and should provide at least SOME fodder for discussion, though I don’t think we will want to go through it page by page as is our usual custom. The book might have been titled, “A History of Bad Ideas (in Germany and France).” I had been hoping for some insight into what makes such ideas attractive to many people; and while there is some of that, the book is mostly descriptive and critical. At least the author is generally on what I consider to be the right side of these issues (unlike one book we read full of bad ideas (“On The Muslim Question”)).
Anyway, next session will be Thursday, APRIL 27, 1:30 to 3:30 PM in Room 101 of Sage, Albany.
