CAPITAL DISTRICT HUMANIST SOCIETY BOOK SEMINARSpring 2014 Schedule
Meetings are held from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m., on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from September through early June with occasional exceptions, and holiday recesses. They will be held in room 101 of the Campus Center, Sage College, Albany, unless otherwise noted at the site.
Our next session is Thursday, June 22, 1:30-3:30 PM in Room 101 of Sage, Albany. (Last one till Sept.)
We are doing Richard Wolin, The Seduction of Unreason. We are up to page 129. I will lead on the next part and Robb Smith has promised to do the final part. (I take this mean page 256 and following ó yes, Robb?) We had a good discussion last time. Some of this stuff is hard going, but I think we had some interesting things to say ó and learned something. I certainly feel that I did, about some intellectual currents with which I was not familiar. This helps in understanding the modern world. It would be nice to finish off this book, but that may be too optimistic. I donít expect to take a lot of time on Bataille and Blanchot. And, in particular, Derrida and deconstruction, which I regard as pure intellectual charlatanism. If you donít agree, please do come and argue the point! Deconstructing Derrida could be fun. Next book is Tim Harford, The Undercover Economist..
